The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a new way of providing disability support that takes a lifetime approach.

The NDIS will provide all Australians under the age of 65 who have a disability that is likely to be permanent and significant with the reasonable and necessary supports they need to live an ordinary life.

The NDIS is for those who are:

  • Under 65 years of age
  • Have a permanent disability
  • Require support for the rest of their lives

Three ways to manage your NDIS plan

Self-Managed: The NDIA provides you with funding so you can buy supports that will best help you meet your plan goals.
    • You must navigate the portal for payment and pay your provider directly for reviews, consumables and services provided.
    • You will need to upload invoices to the portal for payment then pay your provider.

Plan-Managed: The NDIA pays your Plan Management Agency (third party), who will pay your providers for you.
    • You will need to choose a Plan Management Agency to manage your funds
    • It can take up to 14 days for payments to be processed through this type of plan funding.

NDIA-Managed: The NDIA pays your providers on your behalf.
    • If funds are available in your plan, your provider can submit service bookings and requests for the funds required for reviews, services, and consumables directly through the NDIS portal.
    • Payment can be accessed immediately if available in your plan which speeds up provision of goods and can simplify the process.

The Importance of goal setting

The NDIS is based on a policy of looking at the “whole person”. This approach is providing significant and improved outcomes, as these deliver individualised solutions.

These solutions are based on the participant’s goals and lifestyle needs rather than the basic standardised mobility solutions that have previously been available to participants on the state government scheme. With these tailored solutions, participants have successfully returned to work, or had their lives made easier at work, thereby extending their working life.

The basis of these “individualised solutions” are the participants personal goals and aspirations. For participants with amputations the types of goals & aspirations will determine the types of prosthetic solutions that will be required.

When thinking about your goals & aspirations you may wish to ask yourself:

  • What activities are most important to you?
  • What about your life would you most like to change?
  • What would you like to do with less help from others?

You can see the positive impact that the answer to these questions has had on some of the participants with amputations under participant experiences.

Participant Experiences

Greg lost his leg above the knee at the age of 57. When Greg returned to his panel beater role, he found work “too difficult” wearing the publicly funded lock knee he was provided. He wanted to be able to remain active and do all the things he used to do prior to losing his leg. Five years on, Greg is an approved NDIS participant and has since been fitted with a micro-processor knee that suits his lifestyle as a busy and active member of the community and local Amputee Association.

“The best thing for me that has come out of being a participant in the NDIS is that I feel like I have my life back.”
