Enable

What is Enable NSW?

Enable NSW provides funding for NSW residents who are not eligible for the NDIS and for individuals receiving their first (interim) prosthetic limb. The Enable NSW Prosthetic Limb Service (PLS) helps people access artificial limbs that meet their immediate clinical needs.

Who is Eligible for Enable NSW?

You may be eligible if you:

  • Live in NSW and hold a valid Medicare card
  • Are not covered by the NDIS
  • Are not covered by an insurance agency (ie. ICare)
  • Or/And need an interim prosthesis (usually your first prosthesis after amputation)

A clinical team, consisting of a Rehabilitation Physician, Physiotherapist and Prosthetist, will assess your needs and determine the most appropriate prosthesis for your individual circumstances, following the guidelines set by Enable NSW.

How the Process Works

  1. Your clinical team will assess your situation and submit a ‘Consumer Application Form (CAF)’ to Enable NSW.
  2. If approved, Enable NSW will cover the cost of your interim prosthesis, the fittings, adjustments and reviews.
  3. This is usually undertaken through a public hospital clinic or shortly after discharge from a private hospital.

Can I Choose APC Prosthetics?

  • For interim prostheses, provider options are limited to specific clinics based on your location. You may not be able to choose APC initially.
  • For definitive prostheses, you are free to choose APC Prosthetics—even if we didn’t provide your interim limb.
  • As an accredited Enable NSW provider, APC Prosthetics offers high-quality, personalised prosthetic care throughout your journey.

I was provided an interim prosthesis while I was in hospital, but I would prefer APC Prosthetics provide my longer term prosthesis, what happens next?

  • After approximately 6-months, you will need to be reassessed for a definitive prosthesis (your longer-term prosthesis) as your residual limb will have likely reduced in volume, matured and your interim prosthesis is no longer fitting well.
  • At this stage, you can choose your prosthetic provider, regardless of what provider made your interim prosthesis.
